Our Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Mission Statement

DEI Statement

The Piedmont Family YMCA is made up of people of all ages, from all walks of life, working side-by-side to strengthen communities. Together, we strive to ensure that everyone regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, ideology, income, national origin, race, or sexual orientation has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity.

Together, we create strong, inclusive communities FOR ALL.

Dimensions of Diversity

The Y is made up of people from all walks of life who are joined together by a shared commitment to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

This Diversity Wheel diagram represents the various dimensions of diversity. To truly be inclusive and welcoming to all, it is critical to understand the many factors that make up and influence a person’s individuality. If we hold too narrow a view of what constitutes diversity, we will miss opportunities to effectively engage, connect and serve ALL members of our communities.

Equity

is a continual process of ensuring that every individual has the access and opportunity they need to thrive, and are not at a disadvantage in achieving their potential because of their background, identity, or social position.

To advance equity, we must evaluate and dismantle the systemic barriers to opportunities, access and
resources that have prevented the full participation of some groups (based on specific characteristics, including ability,
age, citizenship, economic background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity/expression, national origin, race and sexual orientation), and develop relevant solutions and support systems.

Inclusion

is the full engagement, participation, and development of all communities; the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate. An inclusive and welcoming climate embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions for all people.

Piedmont Family YMCA African American Resource Network

Our mission for the Piedmont YMCA AARN addresses the need for a culturally aware work environment that supports the recruitment & retention of diverse employees. This is maintained by breaking down the barriers of conscious & unconscious biases. This work will expand beyond the internal work & bridges throughout the community.
