Red Cross Trainings

The Brooks Family YMCA works to strengthen the community through personal health and wellness, youth development, and social responsibility. We offer multiple American Red Cross programs that train community members to respond in any emergency and act first until Emergency Services arrive. It is our passion to create a community where all members can help each other in any situation. Below you will find the different training programs we offer throughout the year. 

 

Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid Training

AGE: All Ages (Recommended 11+)

  • WHERE: Brooks Family YMCA, 151 McIntire Park Dr.
  • FEE: $75 for members; $100 for non-members
  • REQUIREMENTS: In order to obtain your certification, participants will need to demonstrate competency in all skills

Babysitter's Training with Pediatric First Aid/CPR

The Babysitter's Training and Pediatric First Aid/CPR course provides youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business to keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care. The course also includes first aid and Pediatric CPR. 

  • AGE: 11-15
  • WHERE: Brooks Family YMCA, 151 McIntire Park Dr.
  • FEE: $155 for members; $205 for non-members
  • REQUIREMENTS: In order to obtain your certification, participants will need to demonstrate competency in all skills.
     
Babysitter's Training Course
REGISTRATION OPENS 1/1/2024 @ 9AM FOR ALL CLASSES
  • 5/10 - 5/11 (Fri 5PM - 8PM ; Sat 9AM - 5PM)
  • 6/14 - 6/15 (Fri 5PM - 8PM ; Sat 9AM - 5PM)


Lifeguard and Lifeguard Review Courses

The Lifeguarding course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. 

  • AGE: Must be 15 by the last day of the course
  • PRE-SCREEN: 300-yard swim (freestyle, breaststroke), 2 minutes treading water (using only legs), 20-yard brick retrieval.
  • WHERE: Brooks Family YMCA, 151 McIntire Park Dr.
  • FEE: $205 lifeguard certification; $150 lifeguard re-certification (FEES WAIVED for staff committed to work at the Piedmont Family YMCA, must pass interview prior to registration)
Lifeguard Certification Training

  • 5/03 – 5/05 (Fri 5PM – 8PM ; Sat & Sun 9AM – 6PM)
  • 5/17 – 5/19 (Fri 5PM – 8PM ; Sat & Sun 9AM – 6PM) 
Lifeguard Review Training:

Lifeguard Instructor Course

The Lifeguard Instructor course trains participants to teach the basic-level Lifeguarding course. Instructors are expected to demonstrate lifeguarding skills to the standard at instructor-level skill proficiency. By the end of the class, instructors will have learned how to monitor participants' practice, evaluate performance and provide corrective feedback and encouragement that is consistent with the skill assessment tools. 

  • AGE: Must be 17 by the last day of the course.
  • PREREQUISITES: Must possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • WHEN: Participants must attend all three sessions of the course
  • WHERE: Brooks Family YMCA, 151 McIntire Park Dr.
  • FEE: $300
     
Lifeguard Instructor Certification Course
REGISTRATION OPENS 1/1/2024 @ 9AM FOR ALL CLASSES
  • 5/10 - 5/11 (Fri & Sat 9AM - 6PM)


Junior Lifeguarding Course

The Junior Lifeguarding course is designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future lifeguards. Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills. They should learn techniques and build stamina during this program.

The Junior Lifeguarding course does not certify participants in First Aid, CPR, AED, or as a lifeguard. 

  • AGE: 11-14 
  • PRE-SCREEN: Swim 25 yards and complete the Red Cross Water Competency Sequence (Red Cross Water Safety and Competency)
  • WHERE: Brooks Family YMCA, 151 McIntire Park Dr.
  • FEE: TBD
