We believe that in a diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive, when our doors are open to all and when individuals of all abilities have the opportunity to participate, thrive, and belong.
Our Adaptive Programming provides modified activities and accessible environments so individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities can engage fully alongside others, with or without disabilities. Programs promote social connection, wellness, and self-confidence in a supportive setting.
We plan to offer a variety of programs for preschool-age through adults.
Open doors for people of all abilities through adaptive activities and accessible spaces.
Build participants’ confidence and life skills through fun, supportive experiences.
Bring people together to build friendships and celebrate diverse abilities.
Provide training for staff and education for members to promote understanding and inclusion.
Expand programs, partnerships, and opportunities so every individual has the chance to shine.
At the YMCA, the safety and well-being of our participants are paramount to us and we want those who participate to get the most out of every activity we offer. Our programs and activities are categorized by participant levels based on our experience and research into what a participant can expect physically and sensory-wise during the activity.
This is to inform participants of what a program may involve and to encourage them to register for programs that will be the most enjoyable and successful based on their needs. If you have any questions about where a participant may place within the levels, please contact us and we will be more than happy to consult with you.
NOTICE: At any time, should the staff determine that a program or activity is not in the participants best interest or well-being, staff will contact the participant and/or caregiver to discuss available options.
YMCA staff does not provide hands-on assistance with personal care or behavior intervention. Staff¬ will provide assistance with verbal cues or visual aids. If a participant needs assistance during a program, it is the responsibility of the caregiver or individual to arrange for an aide.
Individuals serving as a 1:1 aide are welcome in programs free of charge, but required to follow YMCA policy and procedures and complete necessary paperwork.
For outdoor adventure-based programs: Participants must be comfortable in a rustic, outdoor environment (e.g. exposure to extended periods of direct sun, varying weather conditions, insects/animals, grass/dirt/mud). Must be comfortable in water using a PFD (personal flotation device).
Adaptive Programs emphasize participants’ unique abilities and provide trained staff, higher staff-to-participant ratios, and adapted spaces, materials, and activities to ensure successful participation. We offer a wide variety of classes, programs, special events and community outings. These programs promote individual choices, develop leisure and life skills, and enhance socialization.
The Adaptive Participant Form must be completed and on file prior to attending adaptive programs.
